An evening of color, healing & wonder
with master artist Ken Oliver
After years of following the practical path, I picked up a paintbrush again and felt like I came home to myself.
I'm Dr. Kay Corpus — physician, artist, and your host at Soul of Medicine. I created the Art is Medicine monthly series because I believe creativity isn't a luxury. It is medicine.
The act of making something with your hands — of losing yourself in color and texture and flow — does something profound for the body and the mind that no prescription can replicate. This is our very first class together in our new space, and I could not be more honored to launch it alongside one of my dearest friends — a master watercolor artist whose gentle guidance has inspired joy and discovery in students around the world.
Welcome to the beginning of something beautiful.
Dr. Kay Corpus MD · Soul of Medicine · Owensboro, KYScience and soul agree: the world needs more people who make things with their hands.
Creative flow activates the parasympathetic nervous system — your body's rest-and-restore state. The rhythmic motion of brushwork lowers cortisol, slows the breath, and signals safety to an overstimulated nervous system.
Art-making activates the brain's default mode network — the seat of reflection, imagination, and integration. Engaging in creative practice builds new neural pathways and expands our capacity for joy and resilience.
When words aren't enough, color speaks. Art gives form to what we carry. You don't have to be "good at art" for it to work. You just have to show up.
Ken Oliver is a master watercolor artist whose gentle guidance inspires joy and discovery in every class he leads. His signature ColorBurst powders have brought color to the lives of creators around the world, and his intuitive, encouraging approach makes watercolor feel accessible to complete beginners and seasoned artists alike.
Ken believes that everyone has a creative spirit waiting to be expressed — and that watercolor, with its beautiful unpredictability, is one of the most forgiving and magical mediums there is. It's no accident that his classes sell out.
Pando — Latin for "I spread" — is the oldest and largest living organism on Earth. A massive clonal colony of Quaking Aspen trees in Utah, all connected by a single enormous underground root system, estimated to be up to 80,000 years old.
Every shimmering golden trunk you'll paint is part of one ancient, interconnected being — a reminder that what appears separate is often deeply, invisibly connected.
You'll leave with a finished, frameable 11" × 15" watercolor painting — and skills you'll carry for a lifetime.
Soft, luminous color blooms created on dampened paper — the signature look of watercolor at its most expressive.
Preserve the brilliant white of aspen bark, creating striking contrast against the golden canopy.
Add dynamic texture and energy to your forest floor — one of Ken's favorite finishing touches.
Build a forest that feels deep and immersive through transparent washes of color.
Let go of perfectionism and trust the paint. Ken's method makes this joyful for complete beginners.
Designed for complete beginners. You just have to show up.
Show up empty-handed and leave with a finished painting. We've thought of everything so you don't have to.
"The brain that creates is a brain that heals."
